Iraq Teams Up with Siemens Energy and Schlumberger to Boost Power Generation, Curb Gas Flaring

Baghdad, The Gulf Observer: In a landmark initiative aimed at addressing environmental concerns and bolstering energy production, Iraq signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Siemens Energy and Schlumberger on Sunday to tackle gas flaring and harness captured resources to augment the country’s power generation capacity.
Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Oil Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani hailed the MoU as a significant step towards realizing the ministry’s vision of utilizing associated gas for electricity generation.
“This partnership will harness productive and valuable energy to support our power plants and strengthen the national grid,” Minister Abdul Ghani stated during a press conference held subsequent to the signing ceremony.
The MoU lays the groundwork for collaborative ventures with the technology giants, paving the way for synergistic efforts to combat gas flaring and harness the captured gas for power generation, Abdul Ghani affirmed.
Maximilian Rach, Chargé d’Affaires of the German Embassy, commended the collaboration, expressing Germany’s unwavering support for Iraq’s endeavors to enhance energy production and mitigate carbon emissions. He expressed optimism that the partnership would extend its benefits to other sectors as well.
Muhannad Al-Saffar, Director of Siemens Energy Iraq, underscored the MoU’s significance as a catalyst for long-term cooperation aimed at halting gas flaring and converting captured gas into a vital resource for power generation.
“This endeavor will contribute significantly to achieving energy security, reducing reliance on imports, and safeguarding the environment,” Al-Saffar emphasized.
Izzat Saber, Undersecretary for Gas Affairs at the Ministry of Oil, highlighted the pivotal role of collaboration with major international entities in fortifying the electricity sector, optimizing expenditures, and ensuring environmental conservation.
Wissam Al-Azm, Schlumberger Iraq General Manager, reiterated the joint commitment to developing sustainable solutions and leveraging cutting-edge technologies for a resilient and eco-friendly energy landscape.
