Jokowi initiated Ciliwung River waterway project in 2012: Governor of Jakarta

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono highlighted that the Ciliwung River waterway project was initiated by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in 2012 while serving as Jakarta Governor to tackle flooding in the capital.

“We said that this (waterway was an) initiative by Mr. President in 2012 when he served as Governor of Jakarta,” Heru noted in his remarks for the inauguration of the Ciliwung Waterway at Inlet Jatinegara Ciliwung Waterway, East Jakarta, Monday.

According to Heru, the waterway project began since 2013, and it took seven years to be inaugurated today.

“Hence, this project was started in 2013. On behalf of the Jakarta people, we thank the president and minister of public works and public housing (PUPR), who had been behind the work to build it that took about seven years,” Heru remarked.

He said the Ciliwung waterway can solve the problem of flooding in some areas in Jakarta, from Bidara China to Manggarai.

Heru also thanked President Jokowi and Minister of PUPR Basuki Hadimuljono for building infrastructure that became beneficial for the community.

“Today, we inaugurated a project, one of which is tackling flooding in Jakarta’s areas, including Bidara China, Kampung Melayu, and Manggarai,” Heru stated.

At the event, President Jokowi noted that completing the Ciliwung waterway can solve at least 62 percent of the flooding issues affecting Jakarta.

“Completion of the Ciliwung waterway can only solve about 62 percent of the flood problems in Jakarta,” President Jokowi remarked.

Inauguration of the Ciliwung waterway at Inlet Ciliwung Waterway Jatinegara, East Jakarta, was also attended by PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning Minister Hadi Tjahjanto, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, and the community around the waterway.
