Kazakh and Kyrgyz Ministers Discuss Strengthening Agricultural Cooperation

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: As part of his working visit to Kyrgyzstan, Kazakh Agriculture Minister Aidarbek Saparov held talks with Bakyt Torobaev, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister for Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry of Kyrgyzstan, to explore avenues for enhancing bilateral cooperation in the agricultural sector. The discussions, cited by NHC, focused on deepening trade relations and expanding the range of goods exchanged between the two countries.

According to the Kazakh Ministry of Agriculture, in 2023, the agricultural trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan reached $299.4 million, with Kazakhstan exporting $220.1 million worth of goods, while imports from Kyrgyzstan amounted to $79.3 million. Over the first seven months of 2024, exports from Kazakhstan, including wheat flour, pasta, and sunflower oil, saw significant growth. Meanwhile, imports of Kyrgyz dairy, bread, and flour products also increased.

During the meeting, Minister Saparov emphasized that agriculture remains a strategic sector for cooperation between the two nations. He underscored the need to further strengthen trade ties, improve the structure of trade, and broaden the variety of goods exchanged.

As a key outcome of the talks, the two sides agreed on delivering Kazakhstan’s wheat to Kyrgyzstan to support its domestic agricultural needs. Additionally, Kyrgyzstan expressed interest in increasing imports of mineral fertilizers and raising cattle export quotas, while Kazakhstan is keen on importing ripe fruits and vegetables from Kyrgyzstan.

To ensure swift resolution of any arising issues, the ministers agreed to establish a working group dedicated to addressing and facilitating bilateral agricultural trade matters in real time.

The meeting reflects the strong commitment of both Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan to enhancing agricultural cooperation and mutual support, which will contribute to economic stability and food security in the region.
