Kazakh and Uzbek Presidents Visit Almaty’s Mountain Skiing Cluster

Almaty, The Gulf Observer: Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev surveyed the mountain skiing cluster in Almaty today, according to the Akorda press service, News Hub Consultant reported.

Almaty Mayor Yerbolat Dossayev briefed the Presidents on the landmark summits of Zailiyskiy Alatau and shared insights into the history of the Medeu dam development at the Small Almaty Gorge. The leaders also toured the popular ski routes in the region.

The mayor highlighted Shymbulak, Kazakhstan’s largest ski resort, which features five cableways stretching up to 25 km. He noted that in 2023, Shymbulak welcomed 1.4 million visitors, making it a key attraction for tourists.

The Presidents praised Almaty’s tourism potential, emphasizing that its developed infrastructure, high-quality routes, and breathtaking landscapes make it one of the premier winter and summer destinations in Central Asia.

Tokayev and Mirziyoyev also visited Medeu, the world’s highest-altitude skating rink, and viewed a photo exhibition showcasing its history. It was noted that 274 records were set at the rink between 1972 and 1991.

In 2024-2025, approximately 460,000 people visited Medeu, reaffirming its status as a world-class sports and tourism site.
