Kazakh Delegation Participates in World's First Nuclear Energy Summit in Brussels

Brussels, The Gulf Observer: A distinguished delegation from Kazakhstan contributed to the inaugural Nuclear Energy Summit convened in Brussels, according to media reports.

Led by Kazakh Ambassador to Belgium, Margulan Baimukhan, and Chairman of the Kazatomprom national company, Meirzhan Yusupov, the Kazakh delegation played an active role in the Summit organized by the government of Belgium and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The Summit witnessed the participation of leaders from 22 countries and governments, along with presidents of the European Council and European Commission, ministers, and over 300 heads of international organizations, transnational companies, diplomatic missions, and expert circles.

At the heart of the Summit’s agenda was the discussion on the pivotal role of nuclear energy in addressing pressing global challenges, including climate change mitigation, enhancing energy security, and driving economic development.

The timing of the Summit holds particular significance in light of the increased recognition of nuclear energy’s importance, as highlighted during the COP20 in December the previous year in Dubai. Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander De Croo, emphasized the crucial role of nuclear energy in ensuring energy security, while IAEA Director General, Rafael Grossi, stressed the need for the Summit to catalyze global investments and serve as a turning point for nuclear energy.

During the Summit, Chairman Meirzhan Yusupov participated in a roundtable discussion focusing on the steady supply of energy resources, underscoring Kazakhstan’s pivotal role as a global leader in uranium production and reserves. Kazakhstan accounts for 43% of the world’s total uranium production in 2022 and ranks second in terms of uranium reserves, contributing significantly to Europe’s uranium supply.

The participation of the Kazakh delegation in the Nuclear Energy Summit reaffirms Kazakhstan’s commitment to fostering international dialogue and cooperation in advancing nuclear energy as a sustainable and reliable source of power.
