Kazakhstan Celebrates Day of Capital City
Astana, The Gulf Observer: Today, on July 6, Kazakhstanis celebrate the Day of Capital City, a holiday of significant historic and cultural importance to the nation, according to media reports. The Day of Capital City was recognized as a national holiday in 2009.
The holiday was officially established under Kazakh law on June 25, 2008, following an initiative by the Majilis of the parliament. The law, No.47-IV, introduced additions to the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan on holidays.
The celebration includes a variety of cultural events, sports competitions, and video and film screenings about the Kazakh capital, promoting national unity and the revival of the cultural heritage of Kazakhstan.
One of the highlights is the Theatrical Eurasia International Festival of Street Theatres, running through July 7 in Astana. The festival features performances by street theatres from Kazakhstan, Russia, Poland, and Estonia. Today at 11:00 am, a parade of the festival participants will start at City Square and conclude in Central Park.
The city’s five districts will host summer festive concerts titled “Astana – zhuregim,” showcasing domestic singers. At 8:00 pm, a concert titled “Astana – arman kala,” featuring artists from the Yrkegali Rakhmadiyev State Academic Philharmonic, will take place at the amphitheater, with performances by renowned art figures and singers.
The summer project “Megeke Street” will offer master classes and an open-air cinema for all ages in Central Park from July 6 to July 8. Additionally, an open-air concert will be held at 6:00 pm on July 6 in the EXPO territory in Astana, culminating in a drone light show around 10:15 pm. The show, sponsored and featuring 1,250 high-speed radio-controlled drones, 70 of which are pyrotechnic, will be synchronized to music by Kazakh and foreign composers.
Sports events are also part of the celebrations, including the national qualifying tournament for the 5th World Nomad Games, equestrian competitions, the republican Baige tournament “Yeolrda Kubogy” (Cup of the Capital), a mass race, and a tournament for amateur tennis players.
