Kazakhstan, U.S. Strengthen Energy Partnership at CERAWeek Talks

Kazakhstan

Houston, The Gulf Observer: Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy, Yerlan Akkenzhanov, held a high-level meeting with U.S. Energy Secretary Christopher Wright during CERAWeek in Houston, focusing on enhancing global energy security, expanding export routes, and deepening investment cooperation, the Kazakh Energy Ministry said.

The discussions underscored the strategic significance of the 32-year partnership between Kazakhstan and the United States in the oil and gas sector. Officials noted that total American investments in Kazakhstan’s energy industry have exceeded $60 billion, reflecting strong bilateral cooperation.

Major U.S. corporations ExxonMobil and Chevron were highlighted as key partners in Kazakhstan’s largest energy projects—Tengiz, Karachaganak, and Kashagan—which collectively account for approximately 70 percent of the country’s oil production. These projects also contribute significantly to the global output of leading American energy firms.

Minister Akkenzhanov reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s commitment to maintaining stable and favorable conditions for the long-term development of these strategic assets, while also working to enhance production capacities in line with national targets.

Both sides placed particular emphasis on logistics and ensuring uninterrupted energy supplies to global markets. The Kazakh delegation highlighted the critical role of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), which transports around 2 percent of the world’s oil supply and remains the country’s primary export route.

Kazakhstan reiterated its readiness to engage in pragmatic dialogue with all stakeholders to guarantee reliable transit of energy resources. The meeting participants also welcomed joint efforts to preserve the pipeline’s non-sanctioned status, describing it as essential for maintaining balance in the global energy market.

In addition to existing export channels, Kazakhstan is actively pursuing diversification strategies. Discussions included the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) system, with projected volumes expected to reach 2.1 million tons annually in the near future.

Akkenzhanov expressed Kazakhstan’s willingness to collaborate with American investors to maximize the Caspian Sea’s transport potential and expand access to international markets.

Concluding the meeting, the minister emphasized Kazakhstan’s vast natural resource base and openness to advancing technological partnerships, noting that enhanced coordination and knowledge exchange would further strengthen economic growth and mutual cooperation between the two countries.
