Kebaya Recognized by UNESCO: A Celebration of Heritage and Fashion
Kuala Lumpur, The Gulf Observer: The local fashion industry is celebrating the kebaya’s inclusion in UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This traditional garment, cherished across generations, has long been a source of inspiration for designers and is now receiving international recognition for its cultural significance.
Melinda Looi, former president of the Malaysia Official Designers Association, expressed her excitement over the announcement. “Amazing! Hopefully, the younger generation will continue to appreciate and love the craft and art that is the kebaya,” she said. Looi, known for incorporating kebaya elements into her contemporary fashion creations, also highlighted its enduring legacy. “We should all learn about it and continue to make them fabulous for many more decades to come,” she added.
The kebaya’s charm lies in its distinctive design. Characterized by a front split, a pesak (gore), long sleeves, and fastened with three pins or brooches, it reflects a harmonious blend of elegance and tradition.
Bon Zainal Harun, founder of the Malaysian Bumiputra Designer Association, emphasized the kebaya’s rich diversity in Malaysia. “In Malaysia, there are so many different variations. You have the kebaya Nyonya, kebaya Kedah, and many more. UNESCO’s decision is certainly timely,” he remarked, noting the garment’s deep cultural roots and regional adaptations.
The recognition by UNESCO is not only a celebration of the kebaya’s heritage but also a call to preserve and innovate this timeless craft, ensuring its relevance for future generations.
