KPU Invites Friendly Countries to Observe 2024 General Elections through IEVP

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: The General Elections Commission (KPU) of Indonesia has extended invitations to friendly countries to observe the upcoming 2024 General Elections through the Indonesia Election Visit Program (IEVP). KPU Chairperson Hasyim Asy’ari made this announcement during a press conference held at the KPU office in Jakarta on Monday.

The IEVP is designed to offer various international parties the opportunity to witness and understand the intricate processes involved in the implementation of general elections in Indonesia. Specifically, observers will have the chance to closely follow the developments related to voting and vote counting at several polling stations across the nation.

Speaking about the uniqueness of Indonesia’s electoral system, Asy’ari highlighted that the country’s open-list electoral system adds a layer of complexity, making it one of the most intricate electoral democracies globally. He emphasized that the KPU extends invitations to friendly countries through their representatives, namely their embassies in Indonesia.

Asy’ari emphasized the unparalleled nature of the Indonesian general elections, pointing out that the country boasts a total of 2,749 electoral areas. Notably, voters will participate in the simultaneous election of executive and legislative branches at all levels, reflecting the complexity of the electoral process.

Addressing the perception of international experts and election observers, Asy’ari shared that Indonesia’s general elections are considered the shortest in the world, focusing on the duration of the voting period.

Indonesia is set to conduct the General Elections on February 14, 2024, with an estimated 204.8 million voters expected to participate. The political campaigning period commenced on November 28, 2023, and concluded on February 10, 2024, followed by a period of electoral silence from February 11 to February 13, 2024.

During the elections, Indonesian citizens will cast their votes for a president and vice president, as well as members of the House of Representatives (DPR), Regional Representatives Council (DPD), and Regional Legislative Councils (DPRD) at the province, city, and district levels.

Three pairs of presidential and vice-presidential candidates are in contention for the elections: Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar, Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD. The international observers participating in the IEVP will have the opportunity to witness firsthand the democratic process unfolding in the world’s largest archipelago.
