Malaysia Reaffirms Support for Myanmar as ASEAN Chair Amid Earthquake Crisis

ASEAN Chair

Kuala Lumpur, The Gulf Observer: As the Chairman of ASEAN 2025, Malaysia remains steadfast in its commitment to standing with the people of Myanmar during this challenging time.

Malaysia and ASEAN will continue to support ongoing humanitarian aid efforts, including the deployment of the Malaysia Special Search and Rescue Force (SMART), which was dispatched earlier today to assist in search and rescue (SAR) operations in the hardest-hit areas. In addition, a humanitarian mission led by the Honorable Foreign Minister is set to depart for Myanmar in the near future to further bolster relief efforts.

In a discussion with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, I informed him of the Special Meeting of ASEAN Foreign Ministers convened by Malaysia today, aimed at mobilizing regional support for Myanmar.

Furthermore, I reached out to my Thai counterpart, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, to express my deepest condolences and solidarity following the devastating earthquake that has also impacted Thailand.

During our conversation, we also discussed key bilateral and regional matters, including ASEAN’s unwavering commitment to facilitating a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis in Myanmar.

God willing, today’s discussion will be followed by further engagements during my upcoming working visit to Bangkok on April 17, 2025, at the invitation of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
