Indonesia Commemorates International Dance Day in Bali
Denpasar, The Gulf Observer: Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Bintang Puspayoga celebrated the vibrant spirit of dance on Saturday, marking the occasion of International Dance Day alongside thousands of dancers in Bali. The festivities unfolded at the Dharma Negara Alaya field in Denpasar, where approximately 1,100 Sekar Jempiring dancers showcased their artistry.
Expressing her pride in the event’s grandeur, Minister Puspayoga remarked, “It is an honor to be present at this remarkable event. Witnessing thousands of Sekar Jempiring dancers today is truly inspiring. Twenty years ago, we initiated this in Denpasar, and we have strived diligently to preserve and uphold this tradition.”
Amidst the jubilant celebrations, Minister Puspayoga highlighted a unique aspect of the performance, where thousands of women dancers moved in unison, accompanied by senior Balinese performers. Legends of Balinese dance, such as Arini and Susilowati, graced the stage, serving as beacons of inspiration for younger generations to safeguard and cherish their cultural heritage.
The event, aptly named “Naluriku Menari” or “Dance is My Desire,” spanned two days and featured a diverse array of talent, with 2,500 artists, including 2,000 dancers, participating. Ida Bagus Eka Harista, the event’s organizer, revealed that the participants hailed not only from Bali but also from Sulawesi, Sumatra, and even as far as Canada, showcasing a melting pot of dance genres ranging from tango and K-pop to salsa, Balinese, and contemporary dance.
In response to Minister Puspayoga’s accolades for the senior dancers, Harista, also the founder of the Naluri Manca dance community, emphasized the importance of providing a platform for artists of all ages to convene and showcase their talents. “This year’s International Dance Day celebration focuses on honoring our esteemed senior artists. By incorporating their invaluable contributions into the fabric of our event, we aim to foster intergenerational dialogue and reverence for our rich cultural traditions,” remarked Harista.
As the rhythmic beats and graceful movements echoed across the Dharma Negara Alaya field, International Dance Day in Bali served as a testament to the enduring power of dance to unite communities, celebrate diversity, and inspire generations to come.
