Mirziyoyev Explores Initiatives to Expand Electric Vehicle Production in Uzbekistan
Tashkent, The Gulf Observer: Today, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, in a dedicated effort to foster the growth of the electric vehicle (EV) industry in Uzbekistan, conducted a comprehensive review of measures aimed at expanding the production of electric vehicles. The President, who has been a vocal advocate for the development of this sector, underscored the importance of embracing sustainable and innovative solutions in the automotive industry.
Uzbekistan, already boasting extensive experience and a robust infrastructure in the automotive sector, currently hosts eight factories producing various types of vehicles, including cars, passenger and freight transport, as well as agricultural and special equipment. Moreover, over 2 thousand enterprises engage in the production of components and spare parts through collaborative efforts.
During a pivotal meeting held in December of the previous year, President Mirziyoyev emphasized the rapid integration of electric cars into everyday life and issued directives for the advancement of the electric vehicle industry. Further highlighting his commitment, the President visited the headquarters of BYD during his state visit to China in January this year. A collaborative project with BYD has been initiated in the Jizzakh region for the assembly of hybrid and electric cars. Talks with the company’s leadership explored the prospect of scaling up production capacity to 500 thousand units in the near future.
The burgeoning demand for electric vehicles is underscored by a tenfold increase in sales over the past three years in Uzbekistan. Notably, in 2023, 35 percent of vehicle imports comprised electric and hybrid vehicles, reflecting a significant shift towards sustainable transportation.
In light of these developments, President Mirziyoyev has instructed relevant authorities to amplify existing plans for the electric vehicle industry and expedite the implementation of projects. Emphasis has been placed on collaborating with BYD to localize the production of components for electric vehicles, promoting self-sufficiency and strengthening ties with international partners.
Recognizing the pivotal role of innovation and advanced technology in maintaining competitiveness, the President has mandated the creation of an integrated system connecting the Turin Polytechnic University, engineering centers, scientific institutes, and laboratories. This initiative is designed to ensure the industry remains at the forefront of technological advancements.
Anticipating a surge in demand for skilled professionals and workers, the government is set to address the need for qualified personnel. Plans are underway to develop a comprehensive training program to meet the increasing demand for specialists in the electric vehicle sector, with projections suggesting a requirement for up to 10 thousand personnel in the next three years.
As part of the broader strategy, the government has decided to formulate a program aimed at developing a network of electric vehicle charging stations, essential for supporting the growing fleet of electric vehicles in the country. This initiative aligns with Uzbekistan’s commitment to sustainable development and positioning itself as a regional leader in the electric vehicle industry.
