Morocco-Nigeria Gas Pipeline Project: A Catalyst for Development and Regional Integration

Morocco-Nigeria Gas Pipeline Project

Rabat, The Gulf Observer: Leila Benali, Morocco’s Minister of Energy and Sustainable Development, emphasized the transformative impact of the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline project, describing it as a pivotal force for development, regional economic integration, and connectivity between Africa and Europe. Benali’s remarks came during the weekly oral interrogation session in the House of Representatives on Monday.

In her detailed review of the project’s progress, Benali highlighted that the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline, known as Gazoduc, was initiated under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. She reported significant advancements in the project, with most feasibility and technical design studies completed and the optimal route identified. The pipeline will connect to the existing Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline.

The Gazoduc project is set to have an impressive capacity of 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year, requiring an overall investment of $25 billion. Benali noted that from 2022 to 2023, several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, bolstering regional cooperation.

The minister further explained that the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) company will oversee the financing, construction, and operation of the pipeline. The development will be executed in multiple phases, starting with the “Senegal-Mauritania-Morocco” phase, which is currently undergoing a topographic survey.

In March, a strategic MoU was signed by the Ministries of the Interior, Economy and Finance, Equipment and Water, and Energy and Sustainable Development, setting the roadmap for gas infrastructure. Benali underscored that the Gazoduc pipeline is one of Africa’s most significant projects, underscoring natural gas’s critical role in Morocco’s energy transition strategy.

Running along the West African coast from Nigeria through 13 African countries, the pipeline will connect to the European market via Spain. The project is anticipated to yield substantial economic benefits, including job creation and industrial development, positioning Morocco as a leader in green hydrogen.

This monumental project not only aims to strengthen regional ties but also aspires to place Morocco at the forefront of sustainable energy innovation and economic development in Africa and beyond.
