Morocco Partners with Current AI to Champion Ethical Artificial Intelligence Across Africa

Rabat, The Gulf Observer: Morocco has announced a landmark partnership with Current AI, a global initiative dedicated to ethical and inclusive artificial intelligence, during the country’s first-ever National AI Summit held in Rabat. The agreement marks a transformative step in Morocco’s journey toward becoming a regional leader in digital innovation and ethical AI development.
Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Morocco’s Delegate Minister for Digital Transition, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Current AI, solidifying Morocco’s role as a founding member of the global initiative. The partnership is backed by substantial financial support from the Moroccan government, reinforcing its commitment to ethical AI systems that serve the public good.
Launched in Paris in February 2025 with $400 million in initial funding from the French government, the AI Collaborative, and a coalition of governments, philanthropic organizations, and leading tech companies, Current AI seeks to develop open, inclusive, and values-driven AI technologies. The initiative places special emphasis on supporting local languages, cultural diversity, and equitable digital access.
“We take pride in welcoming Morocco as a founding member and formalizing our shared commitment to open, inclusive AI guided by values,” said Martin Tisne, President of the Current AI Steering Committee.
Tisne praised the partnership as a critical step in anchoring ethical AI frameworks within Africa, highlighting that Morocco’s engagement will amplify local values, languages, and perspectives in the global AI dialogue.
Minister Seghrouchni emphasized that Morocco envisions AI not merely as a tool for economic growth, but as a driver of ethical modernization, capable of fostering inclusion, diversity, and sovereignty.
“AI opens tremendous opportunities to modernize our societies within an ethical and inclusive model that embraces our rich local characteristics,” she noted.
During her address at the summit, Seghrouchni unveiled Morocco’s digital ambition to become Africa’s central AI hub, calling for structured continental cooperation that positions AI as a strategic enabler of sustainable and sovereign development. She urged African nations to unite in shaping a common voice in international AI regulation and governance.
As part of the agreement, Morocco will participate in Current AI’s Constitutional General Assembly this month, where its founding member status will be officially ratified.
The Moroccan government’s financial commitment will support pilot programs focusing on:
- Linguistic diversity
- Healthcare innovation
- Digital accountability and transparency
While acknowledging the vibrancy of Morocco’s growing AI ecosystem, Seghrouchni also noted the need for greater coordination, cautioning that scattered efforts lacking coherence and direction will fall short in a globally competitive environment.
“We must foster trust, clarity of vision, and operational excellence,” she urged. “Our AI strategy must reflect not only economic potential but also social and cultural transformation.”
Morocco’s pivot away from traditional models of technological dependency signals its intention to lead African cooperation in AI through multilateral partnerships that are ethically grounded and regionally relevant.
The partnership with Current AI places Morocco at the forefront of Africa’s digital transformation, helping to shape a coherent, inclusive model of digital sovereignty that remains globally engaged and socially responsible.
