Morocco Reaffirms Readiness to Host Women’s AFCON Despite Postponement

Morocco

Rabat, The Gulf Observer : Morocco has reiterated its full readiness to host the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following the postponement of the tournament, which was initially scheduled to take place from March 17 to April 7.

Minister of Industry and Trade Ryad Mezzour emphasized that the Kingdom remains fully prepared to organize the continental competition at any time. “The country was, and is, ready to host – any time, and we will be very proud and very happy to host it, be it this month or within three months,” he stated.

Mezzour noted that Morocco’s packed domestic and international football calendar may have contributed to the delay, while uncertainty surrounding the rescheduling persists. A brief statement issued by the Confederation of African Football cited “unforeseen circumstances” and coordination with FIFA and other stakeholders as reasons behind the postponement.

The delay has fueled speculation within African football circles, particularly in light of recent controversies. These include the disputed conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 final, which reportedly ended abruptly after Senegal national football team walked off the pitch in protest over refereeing decisions during added time.

In recent years, Morocco has emerged as a key hub for African football, successfully hosting a series of major tournaments. These include the Women’s Champions League editions in 2022 and 2024, the 2023 Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations, the Under-17 AFCON, multiple futsal AFCON tournaments, and the latest senior men’s AFCON 2025.

With its growing stature as a leading sporting destination, Morocco is also preparing to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Portugal and Spain. The country’s consistent track record in organizing high-profile events continues to reinforce its reputation as a capable and reliable host on both continental and global stages.

The reaffirmation of readiness highlights Morocco’s commitment to advancing women’s football in Africa while maintaining its position at the forefront of international sports hosting.
