Morocco Showcased as Guest of Honor at 36th São Paulo Biennial

St Andrews, The Gulf Observer: Morocco is presenting its artistic excellence as the Guest of Honor at the 36th São Paulo Biennial, one of the world’s most prestigious art events, currently underway in Brazil.
Moroccan artists and curators are playing a central role in this edition of the Biennial. Among them is Moroccan curator Alya Sebti, who is co-curating the event. Sebti has previously co-curated the Maniesta of Marseille, the Daraka Biennial, and the 5th Marrakesh Biennial.
In an interview with MAP, Sebti emphasized that Morocco’s participation reflects intergenerational artistic dialogue. “The Moroccan participation fully illustrates this mission: established figures such as Chaibia Talal, Farid Belkahia, and Mohamed Melehi assert a distinct modern identity, while contemporary artists like Amina Agueznay, Laila Hida, Leila Alaoui, and Meriem Bennani carry this legacy forward, establishing an international dialogue,” she noted.
Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has been designated as the official carrier of the Biennial, highlighting Morocco’s logistical and infrastructural contribution to the event. The Biennial’s themes of emancipation, decolonization, and care align closely with the Moroccan artistic narrative and its global resonance.
The overarching concept of this year’s Biennial draws inspiration from Brazil’s natural landscapes and traditional poetry. Even the event’s schedule — running from August 6, 2025, to January 11, 2026 — mirrors the migratory patterns of native Brazilian birds, symbolizing freedom from national borders and rigid classifications.
A total of 120 artists are participating, including representatives from six other Middle Eastern and African countries alongside Morocco. In addition to performances and exhibitions, the Biennial will feature debates, special tributary programs, and educational publications that reflect on the history and evolution of this grand cultural event.
