Morocco’s Azzedine Ounahi Reluctant to Join Spartak Moscow Despite Marseille’s Approval

Tangier, The Gulf Observer: Moroccan international Azzedine Ounahi has expressed reservations regarding a potential transfer from Olympique de Marseille to Russian club Spartak Moscow, despite both clubs having reached a financial agreement reportedly worth €12 million.
While Olympique de Marseille has placed Ounahi on the transfer list and accepted Spartak Moscow’s offer, the 24-year-old midfielder remains hesitant as he considers his future, particularly with the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) approaching.
Ounahi, who will return to France on July 1 following a successful loan spell in Greece—where he scored five goals and provided four assists in 25 appearances—faces uncertainty regarding his playing time at Marseille. The club has decided not to reintegrate him into the squad for the upcoming season, prompting them to seek suitable transfer opportunities.
Spartak Moscow, aiming to strengthen their midfield, received permission to engage directly with Ounahi in hopes of finalizing the deal before the summer transfer window closes. Despite the financial terms being settled between the clubs, media sources indicate that Ounahi has shown little enthusiasm for the Russian club’s proposal.
The timing of the potential move poses additional complications. With Morocco set to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Ounahi is determined to secure his place in the national team. There is concern that a transfer to the Russian league could hinder his visibility to Morocco’s coaching staff, as it would place him outside the traditional scouting networks that monitor North African players.
The midfielder now faces a pivotal decision balancing financial gain against sporting ambition. While Spartak Moscow presents a lucrative salary package and the prospect of competing in a demanding league, Ounahi is focused on aligning his next move with his international career objectives.
Marseille awaits Ounahi’s final decision. The French club has made its stance clear by accepting Spartak’s offer but acknowledges that the player cannot be compelled to transfer. Ounahi, for his part, remains intent on finding a sporting project that complements his aspirations, particularly as Morocco prepares to host a major continental tournament.
