Myanmar Accelerates Solar Power Projects to Meet Growing Energy Demand

Myanmar

Nay Pyi Taw, The Gulf Observer: Myanmar is currently developing 11 solar power plant projects across the country, with a total installed capacity of 1,026 megawatts, according to the Electricity and Energy Development Commission.

Among these projects, four are under construction in the Union Territory of Nay Pyi Taw, three in Mandalay Region, one in Bago Region, and one in Shan State, collectively contributing 530 megawatts to the national grid. Additionally, hybrid (Gas Engine + Solar) projects in Mandalay Region and Magway Region will add another 496 megawatts upon completion.

Amid rising electricity demand, the Myanmar government is prioritizing renewable energy expansion to enhance power production. Currently, the country operates 28 hydropower plants, 27 thermal power plants, and eight solar power plants, with a total installed capacity of 6,371 megawatts. However, electricity production has been impacted by damage to power lines caused by attacks and natural disasters.

The Electricity and Energy Development Commission has emphasized the importance of infrastructure development in the power and energy sector, aiming to support daily livelihoods and economic growth through increased local and international investments in renewable energy.
