Myanmar and Thailand Hold Bilateral Meeting on Water Quality Management

Yangon, The Gulf Observer: Myanmar and Thailand convened a bilateral meeting on water quality management yesterday at the Jasmine Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw, with the aim of strengthening cooperation in monitoring, preventing, and controlling water pollution between the two countries.

Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, U Khin Maung Yi, highlighted Myanmar’s ongoing efforts, including the formation of the National Water Resource Committee, the release of National Surface Water Quality Standards in 2024 in collaboration with international organizations, and continuous monitoring of water resources.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Economy and Society of Thailand, Mr Prasert Jantararuangtong, shared Thailand’s water resource management measures, pollution prevention policies, and commitment to international cooperation, pledging Thailand’s support to work with Myanmar in tackling water pollution.

Officials from both countries presented reports on preventive measures for the Nakhon River’s water quality, Myanmar’s surface water standards, and prospects for future collaboration.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Myanmar and Thailand issued a joint statement to enhance cooperation in environmental conservation. The statement outlined commitments to:

  • Exchange information on water quality,
  • Conduct technical discussions between relevant departments,
  • Establish a joint technical working group for sustainable water quality management,
  • Cooperate in technical assistance, capacity building, and knowledge sharing.

Following the discussions, Mr Prasert Jantararuangtong and the Thai delegation visited the Maravijara Buddha Image.
