Myanmar Prioritizes Mechanized Farming and Livestock Development for Food Security

Yangon, The Gulf Observer: The Chairman of the State Administration Council and Prime Minister, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, inspected progress on agriculture and livestock development projects in Nay Pyi Taw Council Area on Thursday. Accompanied by high-ranking officials, he visited Zeyathiri and Tatkon townships to assess the reclamation of mechanized farms and livestock zones.
Mechanized Farming Reclamation Project
At the mechanized farming reclamation project site near Pinlaung Junction in Zeyathiri Township, the Senior General was briefed by Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation U Min Naung on project implementation, road construction, and drainage dredging. He emphasized the importance of large-scale mechanized farming, stating:
“While the reclamation of mechanized farms requires significant capital, it yields enormous profit, benefiting both individuals and the State.”
The project, initiated in December 2024, was completed by February 2025 and currently supports paddy cultivation on 100 acres, with an additional 170 acres under preparation. The reclaimed farmlands have improved water supply and fuel efficiency, reducing manual labor and enabling double and triple cropping.
Boosting Quality Rice Production
During a visit to the Myanmar-Korea Modern Rice Mill in Seinsapin Village, the Senior General inspected rice milling processes and stressed the need for high-quality rice production to meet both domestic consumption and export demands. He underscored efforts to enhance the market penetration of Myanmar’s Pawsanhmwe rice internationally.
Road and Bridge Reconstruction Efforts
The Senior General also visited Nawin Creek Bridge (Ahson) to inspect the reconstruction of a four-lane road after the old bridge collapsed in September 2024 due to heavy rain. He reviewed the dredging of sandbanks and straightening of the river course, providing guidance to the Union Minister for Construction.
Promoting Cold Season Crops and Oil Production
In Shaukkon Village of Tatkon Township, he inspected the cultivation of cold-season crops and summer paddy on farmlands damaged by Typhoon Yagi. He also reviewed the progress of hybrid sunflower plantations on 80 acres and emphasized the importance of achieving self-sufficiency in cooking oil through increased oil crop cultivation.
Developing Livestock Zones for Food Security
The Senior General visited the Kangyi Livestock Zone in Tatkon Township, where he inspected pig, broiler, layer, and dairy farms managed by local businesspersons. He highlighted the significance of establishing agriculture and livestock zones nationwide to ensure the sufficiency of livestock, fish, eggs, and vegetables. He also called for surplus production to be exported as fresh meat while promoting processed meat through MSME industries.
Farmers Praise Mechanized Farming Benefits
Local farmers expressed gratitude for the State’s efforts in reclaiming mechanized farmlands, which have significantly improved water supply and productivity. One farmer noted:
“Thanks to the efficient water pumping system, we can directly irrigate our farmlands, reducing labor and enhancing crop yields.”
The comprehensive agricultural and livestock initiatives reflect Myanmar’s strategic approach to food security and economic growth through mechanized farming and systematic livestock breeding.
