Myanmar’s BANCA Marks World Migratory Bird Day to Promote Wetland and Wildlife Conservation

Bilin Township, The Gulf Observer: The Biodiversity and Nature Conservation Association (BANCA) of Myanmar reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to wetland and wildlife preservation by organizing a community awareness event in Zotekali Village, Bilin Township, in observance of World Migratory Bird Day 2025.

Since 2002, BANCA has played a leading role in identifying, documenting, and conserving endangered species and their habitats throughout Myanmar. Wetland ecosystems remain a priority sector, especially as the country is home to seven internationally recognized Ramsar sites.

Among these, the Gulf of Mottama stands out as the largest wetland in the nation and the fourth Ramsar site to be designated. Each year, hundreds of thousands of migratory birds arrive at the Gulf to overwinter, highlighting its global ecological importance.

This year’s Migratory Bird Day was themed “Creating Bird-Friendly Cities and Communities.” In line with this, BANCA’s event brought together about 90 participants, including village elders, community members, and students.

The program included educational talks on the significance of migratory birds, the benefits of mangrove forests, and the importance of systematic waste management. Participants also engaged in installing awareness signage, distributing garbage bins in schools and public areas, and conducting a community-wide cleanup drive.

BANCA emphasized the vital role of local communities in conserving biodiversity, particularly in wetland regions, and reaffirmed its continued dedication to protecting these critical habitats for future generations.
