Oman Celebrates International Women’s Day in the Maritime Sector

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: Oman celebrated International Women’s Day in the Maritime Sector on May 18, honoring the significant achievements of women in the maritime industry and their essential contributions to the country’s growth. This annual celebration acknowledges the vital role of women in the maritime sector and encourages their specialization in various fields.

Khadija Mubarak Al-Siyabi, a marine safety specialist at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, highlighted the increasing presence of Omani women in leadership positions across all fields, including the maritime sector. “The current period of the renewed renaissance is witnessing the emergence of Omani women in important leadership positions in all fields, including the maritime sector, starting with marine navigation and engineering. The navy employs them in port management and logistics, in addition to preparation for advanced scientific research, which indicates widespread interest in empowering them in the maritime sector by providing training to Omani women and providing them with necessary skills,” she said.

Al-Siyabi also emphasized the government’s encouragement for companies and institutions to offer job opportunities and incentives to women in the maritime sector. She noted the significant contributions of women to the maritime economy, stating that the sector plays a crucial role in the economy and strengthens the position of women in prominent maritime roles.

Basma Hamad Al Hashimi, Chief Marine Navigation Officer at ASYAD Company, expressed pride in working in the maritime sector and praised the designation of a day to honor women in this field. “Working in the maritime sector is a source of pride for Omani women and receives wide praise from those concerned with the maritime sector, whether government or private, noting that she and her colleagues feel proud for the designation of a day for women working in the maritime sector,” she said. Al Hashimi added that celebrating this occasion highlights the status of women, enriches their capabilities, and reflects their significant contributions to the maritime sector.

This celebration aligns with the International Maritime Organization’s decision in December 2021 to designate May 18 as the International Day for Women Working in the Maritime Sector. Oman, represented by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, participates annually in this global event.

Under the slogan “Safe Horizons… Women Shape the Future of Maritime Safety,” this year’s celebration emphasizes the role of women in ensuring maritime safety and shaping the future of the industry.
