Muscat, The Gulf Observer: The much-anticipated Oman Conference on Environmental Sustainability officially began today at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre. Over the next three days, the conference aims to delve into crucial aspects of environmental sustainability, including carbon-neutrality research, global best practices, experiences, and legal frameworks.
Under the distinguished patronage of His Highness Sayyid Asaad bin Tarik Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs and Personal Representative of His Majesty the Sultan, the opening ceremony marked the commencement of discussions that seek to align the efforts of governmental bodies, academic and research institutions, as well as regional and international organizations, private sector companies, civil society organizations, and individuals in the pursuit of environmental harmony.
A highlight of the ceremony was the inauguration of “Naqi” (Pure), the national platform dedicated to monitoring air quality indicators. This platform is envisioned to contribute significantly to public health enhancement and the overall improvement of Oman’s environmental indicators.
Among the diverse activities planned for the conference is an environmental roadshow, showcasing the latest innovations, techniques, solutions, and technologies across various environmental domains. This interactive platform will facilitate knowledge exchange and awareness among participants.
In a significant development on the sidelines of the conference, the Environment Authority and the GCC Accreditation Centre formalized a Cooperation Programme aimed at ensuring environmental safety in the Sultanate of Oman. Signed by Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, and Eng. Mutib Al Mizani, Director-General of the GCC Accreditation Centre, the program outlines collaborative efforts in accreditation, quality assurance, and environmental safety in line with international practices.
The Cooperation Programme establishes mechanisms for the exchange of information, legislations, plans, expertise, and best practices. It also introduces procedures for appointing and registering companies, recruiting specialized experts, and conducting research and studies related to environmental laboratories. Additionally, the program emphasizes the development of inspection and control mechanisms, training inspectors according to international standards, supporting small and medium enterprises, and co-organizing training and awareness events.
The conference is a collaborative initiative organized by the Environment Authority in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme, Sultan Qaboos University, the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism. With a global perspective, the conference addresses 160 scholarly papers from various countries, fostering international cooperation in the pursuit of environmental sustainability.
