Oman Marks World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought with National and Global Initiatives

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Authority, joined the international community in commemorating the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, observed annually on June 17. This year’s observance is held under the global theme “Restore the Land, Unlock the Opportunities.”

Oman’s participation underscores its commitment to raising awareness about the pressing environmental challenges posed by desertification and drought, while encouraging local communities to adopt environmentally responsible practices. The Sultanate is also advocating for the implementation of both local and international policies aimed at protecting natural resources and fostering cooperation to curb land degradation.

The global event highlights the critical importance of restoring ecosystems to create employment opportunities, strengthen food and water security, support climate action, and build sustainable and resilient economies.

In line with these goals, Oman’s Environment Authority continues to implement a series of strategic initiatives, projects, and policies to enhance green cover, conserve biodiversity, and promote long-term environmental sustainability.

Among the key efforts is the National Initiative to Plant 10 Million Trees, launched on January 8, 2020. The initiative is aimed at increasing green spaces, combating desertification, and rehabilitating degraded lands across the Sultanate.

Additionally, the Environment Authority, in cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is executing a project to plant one million mangrove seedlings. The project is designed to enhance marine biodiversity, absorb carbon dioxide, and promote sustainable ecotourism.

Through such comprehensive measures, Oman reaffirms its commitment to combating desertification and drought and contributing to global efforts to safeguard ecosystems and ensure environmental sustainability for future generations.
