Oman Participates in 19th PUIC Conference in Jakarta

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: The Council of Oman participated in the 19th session of the Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Member States (PUIC), held in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Wednesday.
The Omani delegation was led by Khalid Hilal Al Ma’awali, Chairman of the Shura Council. In his address during the opening session, Al Ma’awali commended the conference’s theme, “PUIC Silver Jubilee – Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience,” describing it as aligning with Oman’s aspirations and development approach.
“This theme affirms that the progress of nations can only be built on the principles of justice, integrity, and transparency,” Al Ma’awali stated. He emphasized that good governance has become a vital foundation for sustainable development, noting that nations are not measured solely by their natural resources, but by their ability to manage them wisely through robust, independent institutions trusted by their societies.
Al Ma’awali underscored the critical role parliaments play in reinforcing the values of justice, integrity, and transparency by shaping legislation that regulates these principles and ensures reform.
Highlighting Oman’s own governance journey, Al Ma’awali said the Sultanate has prioritized governance as a key pillar of Oman Vision 2040, a national framework aimed at achieving comprehensive development. The vision promotes efficient institutional performance, procedural transparency, and inclusive societal participation in decision-making.
“Oman Vision 2040 aims to establish a comprehensive governance system rooted in accountability, justice, and the rule of law,” he said, adding that it incorporates best administrative and technical practices to ensure quality and sustainability in public services.
Al Ma’awali also used the occasion to draw attention to ongoing global injustices, particularly the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He criticized the international community’s failure to uphold justice and human rights, especially in light of the suffering endured by the Palestinian people.
“The tragic situation in Gaza reflects a profound failure of global governance and accountability,” he stated. “Our meeting today must serve as a platform to amplify the voice of conscience and activate legal and political mechanisms to support the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.”
On the sidelines of the conference, the Omani delegation participated in the coordination meeting of the Arab Group, where key issues were discussed, including hosting the 20th PUIC session, nominating Executive Committee members, and appointing four representatives from Arab councils to PUIC standing committees.
It was agreed that the Sultanate of Oman and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia would continue their representation of the Arab Group in the PUIC Executive Committee. The meeting also approved the Islamic Republic of Mauritania as the host for the upcoming Executive Committee meeting.
