Oman Participates in UN Geographical Names Experts Meeting in New York

New York, The Gulf Observer: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the National Survey and Geospatial Information Authority, is participating in the 2025 session of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN), currently taking place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, United States.

The session focuses on the critical role of geographical names as symbols of cultural heritage and national identity. Participants underscored the importance of standardizing the spelling of these names both nationally and internationally to ensure consistency and cultural preservation. Discussions also explored methodologies for collecting geographical names, the responsibilities of competent national authorities in preserving and unifying them, and the transformative role of modern technology and artificial intelligence in managing geographical naming systems.

As part of its active contribution, Oman presented its national report outlining major achievements and activities in the field of geographical naming from 2023 to 2025. The delegation also submitted a working paper and delivered a visual presentation highlighting the importance of the Unified Arab System in the transliteration of geographical names from Arabic to Latin script.

In addition to the main session, Oman took part in a side meeting organized by the Arab Division of the UNGEGN, which provided a platform for regional coordination and exchange of best practices among Arab countries.

Oman’s participation reaffirms its commitment to international cooperation in standardizing geographical nomenclature and promoting the cultural and linguistic integrity of place names within the global context.
