Oman’s Environment Authority launches turtle tracking project

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: A satellite turtle tracking project has been launched in the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate to study the nesting conditions and natural habitats of sea turtles in the Sultanate of Oman.
Oman News Agency, reported that the Environment Authority in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate launched today a marine turtle tracking project via satellite, as part of the informational contribution to study the nesting conditions and natural habitats of sea turtles. Satellite tracking devices will work on the turtle’s movement, behavior, nesting and feeding areas.
The project comes with the participation of specialists in the Marine Environment Conservation Department, the Office for Conservation of Environment, the Environmental Control Office, and environmental monitors and supervisors from the coastal governorates, as well as specialists from the Five Oceans Company for Environmental Services.
Engineer Aida bint Khalaf Al Jabri, marine environmental specialist at the Environment Authority and head of the project team, said, “The turtle satellite tracking project aims to monitor sea turtle migration, apply best practices for its protection, study its nesting conditions and natural habitats, as well as understand its behavior in nesting and feeding areas.”
” The project included training 20 specialists from various coastal governorates in the Sultanate of Oman on how to install a number of satellite tracking devices in the “Ras Al Hadd” and “Ras Al Jinz” areas in the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, ” Al Jabri added.
