Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: More than 31,000 runners, both domestic and international, participated in the 2025 Jakarta International Marathon (JAKIM) held on Sunday morning, according to Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung.

“Participants in the Jakarta International Marathon came from 51 countries, reaffirming Jakarta’s position as a host city for major global sporting events,” the governor said, noting the full support of the provincial government for the prestigious international competition.

The marathon commenced at 5:15 a.m., with runners gathering at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta and flagged off from its northwestern gate. The race route passed through Medan Merdeka Barat, heading southward and culminating at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, the official finish line.

The 2025 edition of JAKIM featured three race categories:

  • A 10K run
  • A 21.09-kilometer half marathon
  • A 42.19-kilometer full marathon

All routes were designed to showcase several of Jakarta’s most iconic landmarks, enhancing the city’s appeal as a global sports tourism destination. The event was principally sponsored by Bank Tabungan Negara (BTN), a state-owned enterprise.

To facilitate the race, the Jakarta Transportation Office implemented temporary road closures on 32 routes from 3:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. “We used barricades, water barriers, and traffic cones to block the roads,” explained Syafrin Liputo, Head of the Transportation Office.

Key roads affected included Medan Merdeka Barat, Thamrin, and Sudirman in Central Jakarta, as well as parts of Gatot Subroto in South Jakarta.

In coordination with race logistics and to ease potential congestion around the Monas area, state railway company KAI announced that 11 intercity trains scheduled to stop at Gambir Station would instead terminate at Jatinegara Station in East Jakarta for the day.

The 2025 JAKIM is being hailed as a successful showcase of Jakarta’s capacity to host world-class sporting events, with an inclusive atmosphere celebrating fitness, unity, and international friendship.
