Astana, The Gulf Observer: The University of Oxford is set to introduce a Kazakh language program following the signing of a formal agreement between the esteemed British university and the Kazakh Ministry of Science and Higher Education. This significant collaboration aims to foster linguistic and cultural exchange, enhancing educational opportunities for both nations.

The agreement was formalized during the visit of a Kazakh delegation led by Minister of Science and Higher Education, Sayasat Nurbek, along with rectors from leading higher education institutions in Kazakhstan. The delegation engaged in discussions with Oxford officials, signifying the commitment to strengthen academic ties and promote language diversity.

During the visit, the Kazakh delegation had the opportunity to explore the Oxford Bodleian Library, one of the world’s oldest and most renowned libraries. Special attention was given to ancient manuscripts related to Kazakhstan, providing a unique insight into historical connections.

Minister Sayasat Nurbek presented the Oxford Qazaq Dictionary to the British side, a comprehensive linguistic endeavor undertaken at the instruction of the Kazakh President. The dictionary, published in late 2023, features over 60,000 words in its first 1300-page edition, serving as a valuable resource for those interested in the Kazakh language.

In addition to exploring linguistic collaborations, Minister Nurbek held talks with Maia Chankseliani, an esteemed expert in higher education and Associate Professor of Comparative and International Education at Oxford University. Discussions centered around research internship programs, academic excellence, and higher education policy consulting, emphasizing the mutual benefits of academic cooperation.

The establishment of a Kazakh language program at the University of Oxford marks a milestone in cultural exchange and educational partnerships between Kazakhstan and the United Kingdom. This initiative is expected to provide a platform for students, researchers, and language enthusiasts to engage with Kazakh culture and language within the prestigious academic setting of Oxford.
