Pakistan Extends Humanitarian Aid to Myanmar Following Devastating Earthquake

Islamabad, The Gulf Observer: Pakistan has pledged significant humanitarian assistance to Myanmar following the devastating earthquake that struck on March 28, causing widespread destruction and loss of life.
In a telephone conversation on Sunday, Myanmar’s Chairman of the State Administration Council and Prime Minister, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, spoke with Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, to discuss avenues for support and cooperation in the aftermath of the disaster.
Expressing deep condolences, Prime Minister Sharif conveyed Pakistan’s solidarity with Myanmar and its people, acknowledging the immense suffering caused by the earthquake. He assured that Pakistan would provide immediate relief, including 35 tonnes of humanitarian aid through two air shipments, followed by an additional 17 tonnes of rescue equipment. The Pakistani government further pledged continued support for Myanmar’s recovery efforts.
The Myanmar Prime Minister extended his gratitude for Pakistan’s swift response, emphasizing the strong and friendly ties between the two nations. He also welcomed Pakistan’s commitment to further cooperation and assistance as Myanmar navigates the challenges posed by the disaster.
As of noon on Sunday, Myanmar has reported 2,065 fatalities, with over 3,900 people injured and approximately 270 still missing. Addressing reports circulating on social media, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing clarified that the number of Muslims who lost their lives while praying on the day of the earthquake was closer to 500, contrary to claims of 700. Rescue operations remain ongoing, with efforts focused on locating the missing and providing aid to survivors.
Prime Minister Sharif commended Myanmar’s ongoing rescue and relief efforts under difficult circumstances. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s readiness to offer additional assistance as needed, ensuring that aid, including medical supplies and ready-to-eat food, would reach Myanmar within 24 hours.
The Myanmar Prime Minister expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s support and reiterated the importance of strengthening bilateral relations. Both leaders emphasized their commitment to continued cooperation in humanitarian and disaster relief efforts.
