Panjakent to Host First International Folk Art Festival Following “World Craft City” Recognition

Panjakent, The Gulf Observer: In celebration of its newly awarded status as a World Craft City, Panjakent is set to host its inaugural International Folk Art Festival, titled “Suzani of Panjakent,” on December 12–13 at the Olim Boboyev Cultural Palace. The announcement was made by the National Commission of Tajikistan for UNESCO and ISESCO.
Suzani—large, hand-embroidered textile panels—represent one of Central Asia’s most cherished traditional art forms. Originating from the Tajik word suzan (“needle”), suzanis are known for their vibrant motifs and deeply rooted cultural significance. Historically prepared by brides as part of their dowry, these textiles are commonly used as wall hangings, wedding decorations, and bed or pillow coverings.
Festival Highlights
The two-day event will feature:
- An exhibition titled “Suzani of Panjakent,”
- Displays of works by local and international artisans,
- An official awards ceremony,
- A scientific conference on traditional crafts.
A key attraction will be a special meeting between participating artisans and representatives from the International Folk Art Market (IFAM) in Santa Fe, USA. The program will also include a press conference and the signing of cooperation memorandums. Artisans, designers, cultural partners, and folk art enthusiasts from around the world have been invited to attend.
IFAM’s Role in Global Craft Promotion
The International Folk Art Market is a U.S.-based non-profit organization dedicated to preserving cultural heritage and supporting craftspeople by creating sustainable economic opportunities.
