Paris, The Gulf Observer: In the run-up to France’s Bastille Day celebrations, the French government has announced the latest appointments to the prestigious National Order of the Legion of Honour, with 589 individuals recognized for their exceptional contributions across various sectors. Among the honourees are two Belgians residing in France, international celebrities, and influential figures from business and civil society.
The Legion of Honour (Légion d’honneur), established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, is the highest French distinction, awarded for “extraordinary services to the nation.” The newly published list includes both civilian appointments and promotions, showcasing a wide spectrum of accomplishments.
Belgium is represented in the 2025 list by Carol Duval-Leroy, born Carole Nilens, head of the renowned champagne house bearing her name. Having first been appointed as a Knight in 2007, Duval-Leroy has now been promoted to the rank of Officer. Also recognised is Véronique Aerts from Lommel, CEO of seafood wholesaler Maison Blanc and the oyster house Gillardeau, who has been appointed a Knight.
Among the international names drawing attention is American music icon and producer Pharrell Williams, who became the artistic director of Louis Vuitton in 2023. He has been named a Knight for his contributions to culture and fashion. Chinese pianist Lang Lang has also been appointed a Knight for his achievements in the field of classical music.
The list notably includes Gisèle Pelicot, a courageous survivor of prolonged sexual violence who chose to pursue a public trial against her abusers. Her efforts to bring attention to violence against women have earned her a Knight’s rank in recognition of her advocacy and resilience.
From the business sphere, Guillaume Faury, CEO of aerospace giant Airbus, has been elevated to Officer, while Antoine de Saint-Affrique, CEO of French dairy conglomerate Danone and former head of Barry Callebaut, joins the order as a Knight.
The Bastille Day honours highlight France’s continued tradition of recognising excellence, bravery, and dedication to societal progress across national and international domains.
