Kuala Lumpur, The Gulf Observer: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced a RM1 million allocation to the Kuala Lumpur Football Association (KLFA) as part of the government’s continued efforts to revitalise football in the capital and support the sport’s grassroots development.

Speaking at KLFA’s 50th Golden Jubilee celebration on Saturday, Anwar emphasised that football remains a widely loved and unifying sport among Malaysians, and its development must begin with strong foundational support, particularly in infrastructure.

“This is an opportunity for us to elevate the status of national football, but it has to start from the basics. That is why collaboration with the Education Ministry, the Higher Education Ministry, and other training institutes is important,” he said.

Anwar highlighted that football development is not just about financial support, but also ensuring the availability of adequate infrastructure, such as quality playing fields, training academies, and modern facilities, to nurture young talent in a comfortable and effective environment.

The event was also attended by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who serves as KLFA patron, and KLFA President Syed Yazid Syed Omar.

During his speech, the Prime Minister also called for the preservation of sportsmanship, urging supporters to maintain proper conduct and refrain from behavior that could damage the spirit of unity promoted by sport.

“There are groups of supporters that can sometimes get out of control. Losing does not mean the team should be ridiculed,” Anwar stated, adding that he had instructed the police to monitor and prevent any unruly incidents that could tarnish the image of national football.

He stressed that football associations such as KLFA hold a responsibility to uphold values of unity and respect among players and supporters alike.

At the celebration, KLFA announced a number of strategic collaborations, including with the Ministry of Education to enhance football development at the school level, and with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to implement coaching development programmes and other initiatives targeting the youth.

The Prime Minister’s remarks and financial support underscore the government’s broader vision of using sport, particularly football, as a platform for nation-building, youth empowerment, and community cohesion.
