President Aliyev Holds Landmark Talks in Bratislava to Boost Azerbaijan–Slovakia Cooperation

Bratislava, The Gulf Observer: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev held an expanded meeting with President of the Slovak Republic Peter Pellegrini on December 8 in Bratislava, marking the first official visit by an Azerbaijani head of state to Slovakia.
Welcoming President Aliyev and his delegation, President Pellegrini emphasized the historic significance of the visit and the strong potential for expanding bilateral cooperation.
“It is a great honor for us to welcome you to Slovakia. This visit sends a strong signal that our relations are not only friendly, but also hold tremendous potential for further development,” Pellegrini said, noting the presence of government ministers and ambassadors from both sides as a sign of growing ties.
He recalled earlier discussions that led to the opening of embassies in both capitals and the establishment of a bilateral commission, which is set to convene again in 2026. Pellegrini also highlighted the increasing frequency of ministerial and official exchanges, particularly in defense and economic fields.
Touching on energy security, Pellegrini underlined Slovakia’s current challenges following the EU’s decision to end imports of Russian gas. He noted that Azerbaijan could play a key role in diversifying Slovakia’s long-term energy supply. “We are at the end of the pipeline. You can imagine how costly this is. Azerbaijan can be part of the long-term solution for us,” he said, expressing appreciation for SOCAR’s participation in the discussions.
In his remarks, President Aliyev thanked the Slovak leader for the invitation and warm hospitality, recalling their previous meeting in Baku and praising Slovakia’s participation in the COP29 conference. He highlighted the rapid development of bilateral relations, which were elevated to a strategic partnership following the signing of a declaration last year.
“Last year, we began supplying gas to Slovakia, and we are ready to continue doing so whenever appropriate,” Aliyev noted. He also pointed to promising prospects in defense cooperation and expressed appreciation for Slovakia’s support in reconstruction efforts in Garabagh, including the involvement of Slovak companies in rebuilding the liberated village of Bash Garvand under the “smart village” concept.
During the talks, President Pellegrini congratulated President Aliyev on the “historic achievement of peace” between Azerbaijan and Armenia reached in Washington, to which Aliyev expressed gratitude.
Both sides reaffirmed satisfaction with existing cooperation in energy, transport, and defense industries and underlined Slovakia’s consistent support for Azerbaijan’s relations with the European Union.
President Aliyev extended an official invitation to President Pellegrini to visit Azerbaijan, which the Slovak leader accepted with gratitude.
