Baku, The Gulf Observer: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev inaugurated a state-of-the-art pharmaceutical production facility owned by Scandens Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd in the Hokmali settlement of the Absheron district.

During the opening ceremony, Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov and Director General Kamran Hasanov briefed the head of state on the capabilities and production capacity of the new enterprise.

Built in line with international pharmaceutical manufacturing standards, the facility is equipped with advanced technologies and machinery sourced from Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. It is designed to produce around 800 million tablets and capsules annually, covering a wide range of therapeutic areas including antibiotics, diabetology, hepatology, cardiology, andrology, allergology, and gastroenterology. While the primary objective is to supply the domestic market, the products are also intended for future export.

The 74-million-manat project was fully financed through private investment. With an investment promotion certificate issued by the Ministry of Economy, the company benefited from 6.5 million manats in concessions for imported equipment. The enterprise has created 120 new jobs.

The launch of the facility marks a significant milestone in the development of Azerbaijan’s pharmaceutical industry, as it will enable the full cycle of medicine production — from raw materials to finished products — to be conducted domestically. This is expected to strengthen national pharmaceutical self-sufficiency, support local manufacturing, and boost export potential by producing competitive, internationally compliant medicines.

The new facility will also act as a training hub for pharmaceutical professionals. In accordance with a quadrilateral Memorandum of Understanding signed between Scandens Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, Azerbaijan Medical University, Hungary’s University of Pécs, and Pannon Pharma, both short- and long-term training and internship programs will be offered for medical and non-medical fields.

President Ilham Aliyev officially launched the operation of the enterprise.

To enhance sustainability, the facility has been equipped with 710 solar panels with a combined capacity of 450 kW/h, enabling it to meet approximately 40 percent of its energy needs through renewable sources.
