President Ilham Aliyev Meets U.S. Special Envoy in Washington

Washington, August 8, 2025 – The Europe Today: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev held a meeting in Washington with the U.S. President’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, as part of his working visit to the United States at the invitation of President Donald Trump.
Prior to the meeting, a “Memorandum of Cooperation” was signed between the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) and ExxonMobil. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of President Aliyev and Special Envoy Witkoff. The document was signed by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov and ExxonMobil Vice President John Ardill.
Following the signing, President Aliyev and Envoy Witkoff held a bilateral meeting, during which they emphasized the strategic nature of Azerbaijan–U.S. relations and the value of the visit in advancing the bilateral agenda.
Discussions also included the prospects for expanding strategic cooperation between the two countries, ongoing regional developments, and the normalization process between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Both sides reiterated their support for a sustainable peace agenda in the South Caucasus.
