President Marcos Jr. Departs for Washington D.C. to Push Trade and Defense Agenda with U.S. President Trump

Manila, The Gulf Observer: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. departed for Washington D.C. on Sunday for a three-day official visit, during which he is set to advance Philippine-U.S. economic ties and engage in high-level discussions on defense cooperation with United States President Donald Trump.
In his departure statement delivered at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City, President Marcos emphasized the significance of the trip, highlighting that it is the first visit by an ASEAN head of state to the U.S. under the current U.S. administration.
“My meeting with President Trump is essential to continuing and to advance our national interest and strengthening our alliance,” Marcos stated.
Trade Deal and Tariff Concerns
The visit comes amid rising concerns over a proposed 20 percent U.S. tariff on Philippine exports, which the Marcos administration aims to address through diplomatic negotiations.
“We are here to negotiate with the U.S. to be able to alleviate the effects of a very severe tariff scheduled for the Philippines,” said the President.
Marcos underscored his commitment to securing greater economic engagement, particularly through trade and investment, noting that the Philippines is prepared to negotiate a bilateral trade agreement with the United States.
“I intend to convey to President Trump and his Cabinet officials that the Philippines is ready to negotiate a bilateral trade deal that will ensure strong, mutually beneficial and future-oriented collaborations,” he said.
Strengthening Defense Cooperation
Alongside economic discussions, the President also aims to enhance defense ties between the two longstanding allies. He confirmed that members of the Philippine defense and economic teams are already in Washington, preparing for technical discussions.
Engagement with Business Leaders
During the visit, President Marcos is also scheduled to meet with American business leaders, with a goal of promoting investment opportunities and encouraging economic growth in the Philippines.
He reiterated the Philippines’ unwavering commitment to its alliance with the United States, calling it:
“An instrument of peace and a catalyst of development in the Asia-Pacific Region and around the world.”
Designated Caretakers
During his absence, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, and Agrarian Reform Secretary Conrado Estrella III have been designated to oversee government operations.
