Socio-Economic

Tashkent, The Gulf Observer: President Shavkat Mirziyoyev chaired a high-level meeting on December 3, focusing on measures to accelerate the socio-economic development of the Fergana region, enhance its investment climate, and boost its business environment.

Over the past seven years, Fergana has witnessed significant economic progress. The number of industrial enterprises has tripled to 13,000, creating 116,000 jobs. Foreign investments reached $1.5 billion, and exports totaled $910 million in the first 10 months of 2024. The President emphasized the need to sustain this momentum while further increasing investments, jobs, and exports in the coming year.

Expanding Investment Opportunities
The recent expansion of the Kokand Free Economic Zone by 210 hectares has paved the way for 185 projects worth $1 billion, expected to generate 12,000 jobs. Additionally, a 71-hectare technopark in Kokand will support enterprises valued at $900 million and create 5,000 jobs in its first phase.

Investment agreements with China ($1 billion) and South Korea ($240 million) will further bolster the region’s economy. To facilitate these projects, 1,210 hectares of industrial zones are being developed, aiming to employ 30,000 people, including low-income families.

Agricultural and Trade Advancements
Fergana’s agricultural sector offers immense potential. With 91,000 hectares of available land, plans are underway to increase production and processing capabilities. Projects include enhancing raspberry cultivation in 15 mahallas, utilizing forest land in Sokh for saffron and ferula farming, and creating a 1,400-hectare intensive garden in Oltiariq to produce 55,000 tons of export-oriented fruits.

Construction of a trade and logistics center in Beshariq district is also in progress. Modeled after Termez’s free trade zone, it will boost regional exports by $50 million and create 2,000 jobs. A similar complex is proposed for the city of Quvasoy.

Vision for 2025
The Fergana region aims to attract $3.7 billion in investments, increase exports to $1.5 billion, provide jobs for 500,000 citizens, and lift 22,000 families out of poverty.

President Mirziyoyev instructed regional authorities to refine their proposals, finalize a resolution for economic development, and create favorable conditions for exporters and businesses. He underscored the importance of ensuring accountability among hokims and other officials to achieve these ambitious goals.

The meeting reflects the President’s commitment to driving Fergana’s socio-economic transformation, ensuring sustainable development and prosperity for the region’s residents.
