President of Uzbekistan visits French National Assembly
Paris, The Gulf Observer: President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Tuesday met with Yaël Braun-Pivet, the President of the French National Assembly. Held in the Palais Bourbon, the meeting discussed measures aimed at deepening inter-parliamentary cooperation, as well as strengthening cooperation on ensuring democracy in social and political spheres, the press service of Uzbekistan’s president reports.
In her remark, Yaël Braun-Pivet hailed the progress in implementing large-scale democratic reforms in Uzbekistan, including in the area of parliamentary development. Another focus was on ensuring and protecting human rights and freedoms as well as promoting gender equality.
It was particularly noted that women occupied a prominent place in legislative and executive bodies, business, and social life of Uzbekistan.
In September this year, the republic’s capital Tashkent hosted the 14th Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament (14SWSP) in collaboration with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) which adopted the declaration on enhancing the role of women.
As part of the meeting, the two parties discussed key approaches to the preparation of the constitutional reform as it is planned to establish norms on the abolition of the death penalty. The document would also serve to strengthen human rights guarantees and envisage other important provisions.
The parties agreed to hold meetings of the parliamentary friendship group and to strengthen cooperation at the forums of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the European Parliament, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.
At the end of the meeting, Uzbekistan’s President signed the Guest Book. The head of state also invited the President of the French National Assembly to visit Uzbekistan at any convenient time.
