Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro, The Gulf Observer: President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, arrived at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday to participate in a high-level series of plenary meetings as part of the 2025 BRICS Summit, alongside leaders from member and partner countries.

President Prabowo reached the summit venue at approximately 10:52 a.m. local time, accompanied by Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, and Deputy Minister of Finance Thomas Djiwandono.

During the first plenary session, President Prabowo addressed the forum immediately following remarks by Chinese Premier Li Qiang. His intervention focused on critical global themes, including international peace, security, and the urgent need for reform in global governance structures.

The session was attended by key world leaders, including Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. It remains unconfirmed whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will join the summit in person or virtually, due to the ongoing International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant, as noted by Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov in May.

Also listed on the summit agenda were Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, President of the United Arab Emirates Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, representing BRICS partner countries.

Following the leaders’ addresses, the summit continued with briefings from national security advisers and a working luncheon centered on advancing discussions regarding global governance reform.

President Prabowo’s presence at the BRICS 2025 Summit marks Indonesia’s first participation in the forum as a full member, following its official accession to the BRICS bloc on January 6, 2025.
