Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has lauded Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his pivotal role in brokering a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia following their recent border clash on July 24. The recognition came during a one-on-one meeting held at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday morning as part of the 13th Indonesia-Malaysia Annual Consultation.

“I would like to congratulate you on your leadership in ASEAN, through which you have successfully mediated and brokered a ceasefire in the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia – an achievement we should be grateful for. I thank you for this,” President Prabowo stated.

He further affirmed Indonesia’s readiness to support Malaysia under Anwar’s leadership, both bilaterally and within the ASEAN framework.

“Thank you. This (ceasefire) is a breakthrough of critical importance. We want ASEAN to remain committed to resolving conflicts peacefully through consultation, discussion, and negotiation,” Prabowo emphasized.

Prime Minister Anwar, in response, reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to ASEAN’s principles and pledged continued support for regional conflict resolution.

“As ASEAN Chair, Malaysia will continue to rely on and uphold the bloc’s framework to address shared challenges, including the tensions between Thailand and Cambodia,” said Anwar. He added that Malaysia, alongside Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, and the Philippines, shares the responsibility of monitoring the ongoing peace process.

The high-level bilateral meeting also served as a platform to discuss a range of strategic issues, including land border management, healthcare collaboration, and technological cooperation. The two leaders are expected to witness the signing of several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) covering these key sectors.

President Prabowo was accompanied by top Indonesian officials, including Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Foreign Minister Sugiono, State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi, Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian, and Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin. Also present were the Head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) Muhammad Herindra and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.

Prime Minister Anwar was joined by Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, Home Affairs Minister Saifuddin Nasution, Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
