Prime Minister Chính Calls for Enhanced Vietnam-Russia Collaboration in Nuclear Energy and Science

Hanoi, The Gulf Observer: On Monday, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính called on Russia, particularly its State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom), to deepen collaboration with Vietnam in the development of nuclear power and the advancement of nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes.

During a meeting in Hanoi with Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev, Prime Minister Chính highlighted Vietnam’s enduring gratitude for Russia’s support during its struggle for national liberation and reunification, as well as its ongoing contributions to Vietnam’s national development.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed the significance of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and Russia, noting that energy cooperation for peaceful purposes and space research represents a promising area of collaboration. He also underscored Russia’s critical role in training Vietnamese scientists and experts in nuclear energy, assisting in the design and operation of the Đà Lạt Nuclear Reactor, supporting the Vietnam-Russia Tropical Centre, and supplying radioactive pharmaceuticals for cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Chính outlined Vietnam’s aspirations to become a modern, industrialized nation with upper-middle-income status by 2030 and a high-income developed country by 2045. He emphasized that achieving energy security is pivotal to this vision, alongside fulfilling Vietnam’s commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050. Restarting nuclear power projects is a key component of this strategy, he noted.

The Prime Minister expressed hope that Russia would continue supporting Vietnam through training programs, technology transfers, and expertise sharing in nuclear power management and development.

Director General Likhachev reaffirmed Rosatom’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Vietnam, pledging to support the construction of nuclear power plants, establish a modern nuclear center, localize nuclear technologies, and develop nuclear science and industry with a long-term vision spanning generations.

This meeting underscores the strategic importance of Vietnam-Russia cooperation in nuclear science and technology as the two nations seek to leverage their partnership for sustainable development and energy security.
