Puan Maharani Re-elected as Speaker of Indonesia's House of Representatives for 2024-2029 Term

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Puan Maharani has been officially re-elected as the Speaker of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR) for the 2024-2029 term during the inaugural plenary session held in Jakarta. The session, presided over by Acting DPR Speaker Guntur Sasono, saw the newly inducted members of parliament approve Maharani’s return to the position.

In his address, Sasono highlighted the legislative provisions governing the election of the DPR Speaker, citing Article 427D of the Parliamentary Law. “The DPR Speaker’s position must be held by a member of the political party with the most seats in the DPR,” Sasono explained.

Puan Maharani, representing the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), was selected due to her party’s majority in the DPR, with 110 seats. This marks her continued leadership in the national legislature, following her previous term as Speaker.

The session also confirmed the appointment of four deputy speakers: Adies Kadir of the Golkar Party, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad from the Gerindra Party, Saan Mustopa of the NasDem Party, and Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal from the National Awakening Party (PKB). These appointments were made in accordance with the law, which mandates that the deputy speakers come from the second, third, fourth, and fifth-largest party factions.

Sasono noted that the selection of the Speaker and deputy speakers was reached through a consultation meeting between the acting Speaker and party faction representatives.

Sufmi Dasco Ahmad’s appointment as deputy speaker marks his second consecutive term in the role. Adies Kadir, Saan Mustopa, and Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal, all returning parliamentarians, will join him in leadership.

The inauguration of the newly elected members of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) took place earlier in the day at the Parliament Complex. The 580 members of the DPR and 152 senators of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) were sworn in following the February 2024 general election, which saw an increase in representation due to the creation of new provinces, expanding the DPR from 575 to 580 members and the DPD from 136 to 152 members.

This session marks the beginning of the 2024-2029 parliamentary term, setting the stage for the new legislature’s priorities in the coming years.
