Puan Maharani to Address World Peace at 148th IPU Assembly
Geneva, The Gulf Observer: The Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Puan Maharani, is poised to engage in discussions concerning global peace at the forthcoming 148th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly, scheduled to convene in Geneva, Switzerland, from March 23rd to 27th, 2024.
Arriving in Geneva to partake in the assembly, Speaker Maharani articulated the imperative for collective parliamentary action in fostering world peace. In an official statement issued by the DPR, she underscored the pivotal role of parliaments worldwide in advancing peace initiatives.
“Parliaments must bolster collective efforts to ensure that every individual, despite their backgrounds, lives peacefully,” stated Speaker Maharani.
The assembly will center its deliberations around the theme of “Parliamentary Diplomacy: Building Bridges for Peace and Understanding.” Against the backdrop of global conflicts, including the ongoing crises in Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Palestine, the agenda underscores the urgency of diplomatic initiatives aimed at mitigating conflicts and promoting harmony.
Highlighting the significance of the IPU Assembly as a platform for parliamentary dialogue and diplomacy, Speaker Maharani emphasized its complementary role to the United Nations (UN) and other multilateral forums.
“In these challenging times, parliamentarians must play a role in creating peace,” remarked Speaker Maharani.
In addition to addressing the broader theme of peace-building, Speaker Maharani is slated to participate in the IPU Forum of Women Parliamentarians. During this forum, the focus will be on the intersection of peace and women’s issues, with discussions aimed at advancing women’s leadership in peace processes.
“As parliaments, it is our task to ensure that women participate in peace talks,” emphasized Speaker Maharani, highlighting the imperative for women’s inclusion in conflict resolution efforts.
On the sidelines of the assembly, Speaker Maharani is scheduled to engage in bilateral discussions with IPU President Tulia Ackson, further underscoring Indonesia’s commitment to multilateral cooperation in pursuit of global peace and stability.
