Putin Approves Strategic Partnership Agreement with Iran

Moscow, The Gulf Observer: Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially accepted a proposal from the Russian Foreign Ministry to sign a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The order, published on Russia’s legal information system website on Wednesday evening, confirms the strengthening of bilateral ties between Moscow and Tehran.

“The proposal of the Russian Foreign Ministry, agreed with the interested federal government bodies and organizations, to sign a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement between the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Iran has been accepted,” the statement reads.

This decision follows a series of high-level meetings between Russian and Iranian officials. Recently, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian met with Sergei Shoigu, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, during a visit to Tehran. During these talks, President Pezeshkian reaffirmed his government’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with Russia. “The deepening and strengthening of relations and cooperation between Iran and Russia would reduce the effectiveness of sanctions and unfair measures against the two countries,” the Iranian president remarked.

Last week, during a meeting with Ali Akbar Ahmadian, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, in St. Petersburg, President Putin emphasized Russia’s continued support for Iran’s strategic transit routes. Putin characterized the relationship between the two countries as “strategic,” noting the unity and shared objectives between Tehran and Moscow.

The comprehensive cooperation agreement is expected to be finalized soon, with only technical details remaining, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Lavrov, speaking at a university affiliated with the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described the upcoming agreement as a symbolic step in relations with Iran’s new government. The agreement will cover all aspects of the partnership between the two nations and is seen as a major milestone in their ongoing cooperation.

The deepening partnership between Russia and Iran is expected to further enhance their collaboration in various sectors, particularly as both nations seek to counter international sanctions and bolster their global standing.
