Qatar Participates in UN “Summit of the Future,” Reaffirms Commitment to Global Peace

New York, The Gulf Observer: The State of Qatar participated in the “Summit of the Future,” held alongside the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 79) in New York. Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, led Qatar’s delegation.
In his address, HE the Prime Minister emphasized Qatar’s commitment to global peace, sustainable development, and human rights under the leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. He highlighted Qatar’s third phase of its National Development Strategy, part of Qatar National Vision 2030, aimed at building a diversified and sustainable knowledge-based economy through science, technology, and innovation.
HE the Prime Minister reaffirmed Qatar’s dedication to international multilateral efforts, mentioning the country’s ongoing financial support for global initiatives. This includes a $500 million pledge to the core resources of UN agencies and $100 million allocated to small island developing states and least developed countries (LDCs) in the Caribbean, Pacific, and Africa to combat climate change. Qatar also hosted the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) in 2023 and pledged $60 million to support their development programs.
Qatar’s contributions to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) include allocating 20% of its Special Drawing Rights, valued at $1 billion, to the IMF’s Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust (PRGT) and Resilience and Sustainability Trust (RST), aimed at enhancing concessional lending for low-income nations and those vulnerable to climate impacts. Furthermore, the Prime Minister announced Qatar’s Debt Relief for Education Initiative, launched in partnership with the World Bank.
HE Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the need for global cooperation to overcome pressing challenges such as armed conflicts, climate change, and economic instability, particularly affecting developing nations. He stressed the importance of reforms in global governance, international financing structures, and bridging the digital divide.
On the subject of regional peace, HE the Prime Minister highlighted Qatar’s ongoing mediation efforts, particularly its role in mediating between Hamas and Israel, alongside Egypt and the United States, to stop the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He reiterated Qatar’s call for a ceasefire and the release of hostages, while urging the international community to take a strong stance on violations of international law, especially regarding the attacks on schools, hospitals, and displaced persons in Gaza.
Concluding his address, HE the Prime Minister expressed Qatar’s pride in hosting the Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2) in 2025, a key event aimed at addressing social development challenges globally.
The “Summit of the Future” focuses on critical global issues such as sustainable development, peace, security, digital transformation, youth empowerment, and human rights. It is expected to conclude with the adoption of the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact, and the Declaration on Future Generations by participating nations.
