QRCS launches project to support cancer patients in Yemen
Doha, The Gulf Observer: Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has launched a project to support cancer and malignant tumour patients in Yemen, aiming to support 318 cancer patients by providing the costs of radiation sessions and diagnostic tests in collaboration with the National Center for Cancer Treatment and specialised centres, at a cost of $222,202.
In this regard, head of the Republican Educational Hospital in the capital, Dr. Mohammed Matar Juhaf, said: “We welcome Qatar Red Crescent to the General Republican Hospital in the capital. The hospital is working hard to meet the needs of cancer patients in coordination with the National Center for Cancer Treatment and Qatar Red Crescent, which is a good contribution that we hope will lead to greater contributions. We appreciate this cooperation with Qatar Red Crescent, and the coordination is ongoing for upcoming projects.”
General Director of the National Center for Cancer Treatment in the capital, Dr. Abdullah Dahan Thawabah, said: “It is the first time we have received a qualitative project that adopts the free service of diagnosis through CT scans and MRI. The idea of the project is remarkable and encourages us to search for integrated solutions for cancer patients in cooperation with Qatar Red Crescent, which has had a positive impact on patients, doctors, and the centre.”
Thawabah added, “Qatar Red Crescent has continued this project by adopting radiation therapy for cancer patients, which it has previously provided in a project during 2022, and it had a great impact, reducing the suffering of patients and supporting them in bearing the high costs in light of the country’s difficult conditions during this phase.
“Today, cancer patients have the ability to access treatment for free. We extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to Qatar Red Crescent for their generous assistance, and we hope it continues, and we will work with them to provide these services that have significant and great impact on our patients.”
The number of cancer patients in Yemen has exceeded 95,000 according to official records, excluding those unregistered. Due to the weakness of specialised and supporting institutions, the burdens on cancer patients, their families, and the community have increased.
The scarcity of specialised and supporting institutions for cancer treatment, as well as the weakness of diagnostic and treatment services, are among the most significant challenges faced by patients in the Yemeni health sector. Therefore, Qatar Red Crescent seeks to alleviate the suffering of cancer patients, facilitate access to diagnostic and radiation treatment services.
