Raila Odinga Holds Talks with Chinese Ambassador on Strengthening Kenya-China Ties

Nairobi, The Gulf Observer: Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga and National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi on Monday held discussions with the Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, Guo Haiyan, focusing on the long-standing bilateral relations between Kenya and China.
Following the meeting, Raila stated that the Ambassador’s visit was a courtesy call, similar to those made by other envoys in recent months. Their discussions centered on Kenya-China diplomatic relations, particularly in trade, industry, technology, and infrastructure, reinforcing the deep-rooted mutual cooperation the two nations have enjoyed for decades.
“Today, I have received Guo Haiyan, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China. She paid a courtesy call on me just like other ambassadors have done. This is basically in my capacity as the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement,” Raila said in a statement.
He underscored the importance of ongoing engagements between Kenya and China concerning development projects and economic collaboration.
“We have discussed issues of common interest as China has been with this country for as long as it was independent, and they have financed development projects in the country,” Raila noted.
Speaking at a press briefing after the meeting, Raila steered clear of political discussions, emphasizing that his focus remained on the economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations.
“I’m not part of the government, therefore I’m only concerned about the mutual relationship between our two countries,” he stated.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of President William Ruto’s June 2023 Cabinet reshuffle, which saw the incorporation of some opposition figures from ODM into his broad-based government. Raila has, however, maintained that his engagements with various leaders do not signify any political alignment but are solely focused on fostering international partnerships.
Since his unsuccessful bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship, Raila has met with several envoys, including the United Kingdom High Commissioner to Kenya, Neil Wigan, on March 18. Their discussions touched on Kenya-UK relations, the state of the nation, and global diplomatic dynamics.
“I’ve had a very illuminating discussion with H.E. Neil Wigan, the United Kingdom High Commissioner to Kenya this morning, focusing on our country’s long-running relationship with the UK, the state of the Kenyan nation, and the evolving international system,” Raila remarked after the meeting.
He further expressed optimism about the UK’s shift from aid-based assistance to Kenya towards increased economic investments, as well as broader European diplomatic engagement with various global regions on key international issues.
The ODM leader’s series of diplomatic meetings reflect his continued interest in Kenya’s international positioning and economic partnerships beyond domestic political engagements.
