Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Ursula von der Leyen Discuss Iran Tensions, Call for Return to Diplomacy

Ankara, The Gulf Observer: Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a telephone conversation on Sunday with Ursula von der Leyen to discuss the recent attacks on Iran and the resulting regional tensions, according to Türkiye’s Directorate of Communications.
During the call, President Erdoğan urged all parties to prioritize diplomacy and dialogue in order to prevent further escalation. He emphasized Türkiye’s readiness to provide all necessary support for efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in the region.
Erdoğan also highlighted the importance of close coordination between Türkiye and the European Union throughout the ongoing crisis, stressing that joint efforts would be essential in addressing the broader security implications.
The conversation comes amid heightened tensions following strikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on Saturday. According to reports, several senior Iranian figures were killed in the attack, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In response, Tehran carried out a series of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, U.S. assets, and several Gulf countries.
A similar escalation occurred last June when Israel and the United States launched strikes on Iran, triggering a 12-day conflict that ended with a ceasefire.
President Erdoğan reiterated Türkiye’s longstanding position that regional disputes must be resolved through peaceful means and international cooperation, warning that further escalation could threaten broader regional and global stability.
