Record Electric Vehicle Charging Volume Expected on China’s Highways During Spring Festival Holiday
Beijing, The Gulf Observer: Electric vehicle (EV) charging volumes on China’s highways are projected to reach a record high during the upcoming Spring Festival holiday, with daily highway charging volumes expected to exceed 7.5 million kilowatt-hours, according to data from the State Grid Corporation of China.
The eight-day holiday, starting on January 28, will see a 52-percent year-on-year increase in charging demand. The peak single-day charging volume during this period is anticipated to surpass 9 million kilowatt-hours, marking a 34-percent rise compared to last year’s figures.
As millions of travelers take to the roads ahead of the holiday, charging demand will experience a significant spike on January 26 and 27, especially between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., when the highest number of EVs are expected to be on the move.
To accommodate this surge in charging demand, China has rapidly expanded its EV charging infrastructure. By the end of 2024, 98 percent of highway service areas will be equipped with charging facilities, with 35,000 charging poles in operation across the country.
The growth of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China has also played a key role in this surge. By the end of 2024, the number of NEVs in use in China is projected to reach 31.4 million, a 260-fold increase over the past decade. This growth is attributed to the country’s technological advancements in the NEV sector, improved charging infrastructure, and a rising national awareness of eco-friendly practices.
